Automobile Insurance & Mexican Driver’s license
If you are going to live here permanently it's a good idea, but not required to have a Mexican license. A Mexican license is required if you have Mexican plates on your car
It is extremely important to obtain Mexican Auto Insurance. If you plan ahead, you can save more than buying insurance at the border for $13.00 a day. There are companies who will write an annual policy, for multiple entry, that is well worth doing if you make 4 or 5 trips a year. This can be accomplished by mail or fax and credit card. The reason this insurance is so important is, if you are in any kind of fender-bender or accident, they can impound your car until fault is found. If you have the liability insurance from Mexico, this guarantees you have the capability to take care of damages, in the event you are found to be at fault and thereby don't have to deal with as many challenges. (The horror stories reported by L.A. Times and San Diego Union are because the "tourist" didn't properly plan their trip and protection. Of course, the media just love getting hold of the bad news, never any of the good!)
There are four major agencies in our area you can select for your daily Mexico Insurance, full time coverage or renters/home owners insurance. You can insure your "driver's license" for liability only which covers you with any car you are driving. Some (not all) United States insurance carriers cover you within 75 miles in Mexico, but Mexico Authorities do NOT recognize U.S. coverage in case there are injuries, so you STILL NEED liability insurance for Mexico even if your coverage is good within that 75 mile limit. DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

For Mexican Insurance prior to crossing the border:
From Baja Bound Mexican Insurance Services, Inc.: Baja Bound Mexican Insurance Services, Inc has been in business selling Mexican insurance on the border for over 10 years. In 1999, the first version of the Bajabound.com web site was launched. At that time we saw the potential to make Mexican insurance an easy, convenient thing to purchase at home or in the office in a matter of minutes. We set out to make the purchasing process as easy as possible, with a streamlined interface that enables the insurance customer to enter information into a few on-line forms and then immediately print out the official certificate of Mexican insurance. Since then, we have continued to see the tremendous growth of the internet, and continued interest in our on-line services and information. Get started by requesting a quote at http://www.bajabound.com or by calling toll free from within the U.S. at (888) 552-2252. If in the San Diego area, dial (619) 702-4292
